Through my editing services, I offer thoughtful guidance on how to enhance your manuscript, to bring out its strengths and captivate your readers. My aim is to provide clear, constructive feedback for your next revision, whether it's on the level of plot, paragraph, or sentence.
Overview
Fine-Detail
Punctuation and grammar are simple matters for most authors, but a second set of eyes here can be crucial to polish your work. I also help make sure your own writing style - your voice and the writing decisions that come with that - remains consistent throughout the work. The end goal is to smooth out any barriers to understanding, leaving the reader with only your writing and no distractions.
The Big Picture
Movements of plot and characterization, and how well your overall writing style works. Together, we can work out kinks in continuity and ensure your readers have the right amount of clarity about what's going on in your manuscript. I also analyze and work with you on the direction your characters develop, the trajectory of your plot, where the moments of tension lie, how to enhance chapter-to-chapter forward lean, your pacing, and more.
On the Side
I can write a reader's report on the first 100 pages of your manuscript. This will give you broad insight into the way a publisher will look at your novel - it's strengths and weaknesses, marketability, and whether it deserves a second look by senior editors - based on its quality. In the event of a full manuscript edit I will also provide a plot summary and a character directory.

A more thorough overview of your work with page-by-page comments on the way your story functions, as well as suggestions for revision on the sentence level, for clarity, style, and conciseness. Includes proofreading, as well.

Developmental-Editing
Working collaboratively to shape your story, or portions of your story. Developmental editing typically takes place in the early stages of writing, or during a total revision of a draft. I can provide suggestions for the overall shape of your story or guide your revision, so that you can take your next steps as a writer.

Reader's reports can give you an expectation of how your story in its current form would fare under the eyes of a publisher looking for new work.
Manuscript reviews for more general, broad-based suggestions for directions to move your story.
Plot and character summaries to help you stay organized.
(Editing services will generally include the content of a manuscript review, alongside more specific suggestions for improvement. A reader's report, plot summary, and character directory would also be included in those services.)
In addition to full-manuscript services, you can apply these services to any portion of your story you desire, whether it's your first 10 pages - the part of your story that is most important to grab a reader - or the first 30 or 100 pages - the amounts that many publishing houses use to evaluate submissions. And of course, all services apply to short stories as well.
Copy Editing for Websites, Articles, Newsletters, and More
I offer the same services as above for other forms of copy, whether that includes the text of a website, an article for a journal or newsletter, or the contents of presentations or advertisements. I edit both academic and non-academic work. Generally, you can expect the same pricing to apply.
Proofreading
Outside of novels and other manuscripts, this service focuses on catching errors of grammar and punctuation, and ensuring proper usage of jargon or technical terms.
Copy-Editing
As with manuscript services, this is a more intensive form of edit. I ensure your language is as professional or casual as you want it to be, and that your ideas, messages, and calls to action are organized in the right way to capture your audience. Clear messaging and properly laid-out arguments are the focus here, and I can also help meet word and/or space requirements.
Developmental editing
I work with you to build your story from the ground up, in order to present your data, arguments, or message the best way possible. Depending on your work, this may involve brainstorming proper formats and constructing a work-flow, or simply guiding you through revisions of your draft.
